Government Adds 2000 New Homes for Armed Forces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) is set to benefit from a major housing boost, with the government approving the construction of over 2,000 housing units nationwide. This initiative aims to address the long-standing accommodation challenges faced by military personnel.

Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, announced the programme on Sunday, December 14, 2025, during the GAF’s end-of-year non-denominational religious parade at Burma Camp. Approximately 700 of these units will be located in Accra, spread across five different garrisons.

“Next year, we will see a massive improvement in our accommodation situation,” Lt Gen Agyapong assured the troops. “The government has sanctioned arrangements that will see the rollout of over 2,000 housing units across all garrisons.”

The housing drive doesn’t end there, with government plans indicating a potential delivery of an additional 8,000 units over the next five years. The overarching goal, according to Lt Gen Agyapong, is to ensure personnel of the Armed Forces live in decent and dignified conditions. “This arrangement is to ensure that our gallant personnel have decent places of abode,” he stressed.

Beyond improving living conditions, the Defence Staff also revealed plans to significantly retool the Armed Forces. A comprehensive package, already approved by the President, will focus on strengthening the air, sea, and land capabilities.

The Air Force is expected to receive both helicopters and long-haul jets, while the Navy will see the acquisition of offshore patrol boats to enhance maritime security. The Army will be equipped with additional armoured vehicles, armoured personnel carriers, weapons, vehicles, defence stores, protective gear, and ammunition.

Lt Gen Agyapong also addressed recent online claims concerning the welfare of Ghanaian troops serving on UN peacekeeping missions. He firmly dismissed these claims as misinformation, stating, “These are very far from facts,” and urged the public to rely on accurate, verified sources.

The government, he reiterated, remains steadfastly committed to enhancing both the living standards and operational effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces.
