Former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has thrown her weight behind Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries, stating he is crucial to her political future.
Addressing party delegates and supporters, Ms. Safo urged for unity and strategic thinking as the NPP navigates a pivotal leadership transition. “It is time for Bawumia,” she declared.
Acknowledging the ambitions of other contenders, including Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, Ms. Safo asserted her right to pursue her own political path. “I am a politician, and Honourable Kennedy Agyapong is also a politician. We both have opinions and ambitions,” she stated.
She cautioned that the selection of a leader should prioritize the long-term interests of the party, rather than personal connections. “Leadership decisions must be based on what is best for the NPP, not on who you know,” she emphasized.
Ms. Safo was quick to dispel any notion of animosity towards Mr. Agyapong, with whom she shares two children. “I do not hate Honourable Kennedy Agyapong. We have two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. However, this is not a matter of family and friends within the NPP,” she clarified.
Reflecting on the party’s recent electoral loss, Ms. Safo called for introspection. “We must learn from our mistakes that led to us being in opposition,” she said. She identified the perception of favouritism towards family and friends during the previous administration as a key contributing factor to the defeat.
“While in government, we made that mistake, and it has cost us,” she observed, adding that the party must avoid repeating such errors.
The former MP also highlighted her extensive service to the NPP and the nation, questioning whether her experience would be valued under a different leadership. “I have been a Member of Parliament for twelve years, a Deputy Majority Leader, and served as Minister for Procurement and Gender. Have I not served?” she asked.
While acknowledging Mr. Agyapong’s contributions, Ms. Safo expressed concerns about her own future prospects should he become President. “If Honourable Ken were to win and become President, and he were to review my CV, I doubt my experience would be recognised,” she explained.
“Considering my work and dedication to this nation and our party, it would be impossible for someone I share two children with to appoint me to a ministerial position – it would cause a national uproar. And the Kennedy Agyapong I know would not do it. Therefore, my political career and future are at stake. My future lies with Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia,” she concluded.
