Accra – The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has announced a significant oil discovery in the Deepwater Tano Cape Three Points (DCTCP) block, potentially boosting the nation’s oil reserves. The discovery, made by the drilling of the Tano-1 well, is estimated to hold between 500 million and 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

According to a statement released by GNPC on Tuesday, initial assessment indicates a high-quality reservoir with substantial commercial potential. “This is a very exciting development for Ghana,” said Opoku-Agyemang, Executive Director of GNPC, in the statement. “It confirms our belief in the significant hydrocarbon potential of the DCTCP block and positions Ghana as a key player in the West African oil and gas industry.”

The Tano-1 well was drilled by a consortium led by Tullow Oil, with partners including Kosmos Energy and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. The well encountered a gross oil pay of 118 meters, with 82 meters of net pay in excellent quality sandstone reservoirs.

“We are pleased with the results of the Tano-1 well,” stated Rahul Dhir, Tullow Oil’s Country Manager for Ghana. “It demonstrates the continued success of our exploration strategy in Ghana and provides a strong foundation for future development.”

The discovery is expected to attract further investment into Ghana’s oil sector and create numerous employment opportunities. However, experts caution that it will take several years and significant capital expenditure to bring the oil to production. The GNPC is currently working with its partners to conduct further appraisal drilling to confirm the size and commercial viability of the discovery.

The Ministry of Energy is expected to brief Parliament on the discovery and its potential implications for the national economy in the coming weeks. This discovery comes at a crucial time for Ghana, as the country seeks to diversify its energy sources and reduce its reliance on imports.
