The 2025 Padel Accra Open international tournament commenced at the S2 Sports Complex in Spintex on Monday, promising a week of thrilling competition and culminating on Sunday.

At least sixteen international teams are battling it out against Ghana’s best padel players for top honours and a share of the substantial prize money.

This year’s tournament is set to be the biggest yet, marking the climax of the Ghana padel season. Teams from France, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Lebanon, Togo, Egypt, Spain, Argentina, and Senegal are all vying for the championship title.

Jean-Noel Said, a representative of the Professional Padel Association of Ghana, highlighted the significant growth of the event. “What is special about this tournament is that we have so many teams from outside. We have at least ten teams from abroad that have come to participate in this event. Last year, we had, I think, about four or five teams,” he said.

“So that is what makes it so special, that we have been recognised around our neighbouring countries and European countries like France, and because we have some French players, this tournament is quite interesting for them to come and play and experience the level and experience the Ghana way,” Said added.

The Egyptian duo of Aly Zaghloul and Sherif Makhlouf expressed their confidence in securing victory in the men’s P250 category. “For me, I’m excited to win this tournament. The weather here is very good. All the people are too nice and too kind. We don’t use anything except playing this tournament and putting 100%,” Zaghloul stated.

Makhlouf echoed his partner’s sentiments, saying, “This week, we’re looking forward to winning this tournament in Ghana. We’re excited. We’ll give 100% and we’ll try to do our best.”

The tournament will draw to a close on Sunday with a prize-giving ceremony where winners will be awarded medals and prizes.
