Stephen Amoah Urges Black Stars to Guard Against Complacency Ahead of England World Cup Clash

Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament Stephen Amoah has cautioned the Black Stars against complacency as Ghana prepare for their pivotal FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D encounter against England on Tuesday in Boston.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, Amoah urged every stakeholder in the national team set-up — from players and coaches to management and supporters — to remain grounded following Ghana’s dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening match.

“I want to send this caution. I beg all the stakeholders, let them not be complacent. This includes the coach, the management body, the players and the entire state, because the Bible says that faith without works is dead,” Amoah told the House.

The lawmaker’s warning carries weight given the calibre of Ghana’s next opponent. England, ranked among the tournament’s pre-event favourites, will pose a far stiffer challenge than Panama, and the Black Stars will need to be at their sharpest to secure a result that could define their progress in the competition.

Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner against Panama has injected genuine optimism into the Ghanaian camp, but Amoah argued that the euphoria must not cloud the work still required. He called on the technical team to maintain rigorous tactical preparation and urged players to treat every training session as critical to their readiness.

The MP’s remarks echoed a broader sentiment in Ghanaian football circles that the Panama result, while encouraging, offered limited evidence of the team’s ability to compete with the tournament’s elite. England dismantled their opening opponents with clinical efficiency and will arrive in Boston as heavy favourites.

There are reasons for cautious optimism, however. England midfielder Declan Rice is expected to be available despite a back concern, but the Black Stars have shown a resilience under pressure that suggests they will not be overawed by the occasion.

Amoah urged the state and supporters to provide stable backing without generating unnecessary pressure, arguing that the team functions best when it can focus on preparation without external distractions. He also appealed for a combination of spiritual resolve and concrete effort, saying prayer and hard work must go hand in hand if Ghana harbour ambitions of a deep run in the tournament.

The England match is scheduled for Tuesday at a venue in Boston, with both sides aware that a victory would significantly strengthen their position in Group D. For Ghana, a positive result against one of the tournament’s traditional powerhouses would represent a statement of intent and a vindication of the faith that supporters have placed in this generation of players.
