Two MAN diesel articulated trailers collided in the early hours of Sunday near Kwahu Hwidiem in the Nkawkaw Municipality of the Eastern Region, spilling diesel across the carriageway and leaving both vehicles badly damaged.
Remarkably, no casualties were recorded.
The Ghana National Fire Service received a distress call at 23:59 GMT on Saturday, 14 June, and dispatched a seven-member crew from the New Abirem Municipal Fire Station, led by Station Officer Two Boakye. The team arrived at the scene at 00:25 and found the two trailers locked together after what one of the drivers described as a collision during an overtaking manoeuvre.
Firefighters spent more than five hours at the scene, washing away the diesel spill and clearing shattered glass and debris from the road. The diesel had created a dangerously slippery surface, raising the risk of secondary accidents for motorists travelling the route in the early morning hours.
The crew worked alongside the Ghana Police Service to manage traffic and restore safe conditions for road users. The operation concluded at 06:44, with all personnel returning safely to base.
The incident adds to a growing list of heavy-vehicle accidents on Ghana’s highways. The Ghana National Fire Service has in recent weeks responded to multiple emergencies across the country, from commercial fires to fuel-related incidents, underscoring the breadth of hazards the service faces beyond its traditional firefighting role.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary accounts suggest one trailer may have attempted to overtake the other, though investigators are expected to examine road conditions, vehicle speeds, and the drivers’ accounts before reaching a conclusion.
The Eastern Region has seen several heavy-vehicle incidents in recent years, often linked to narrow road sections and the high volume of articulated trucks transporting goods between Accra and the northern parts of the country.
