A swift response by the Ghana National Fire Service prevented a potentially devastating fire from spreading at the GRIDCo Power Station in Techiman on Tuesday, after one of the facility’s capacitor banks caught fire in the early hours of the morning. The incident, which was brought under control within 13 minutes, raises familiar questions about the vulnerability of Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
The distress call reached the Techiman Fire Station at 5:22 a.m. on June 9, reporting an electrical fire at the power station in the Techiman Municipality. A six-member firefighting crew, led by Assistant Station Officer Oppong Kyekyeku, was dispatched immediately and arrived at the scene by 5:27 a.m. The team found one capacitor bank already engulfed in flames.
After assessing the situation and implementing the necessary safety measures, the firefighters used extinguishers installed at the facility to contain the blaze. The fire was brought under control by 5:35 a.m. and completely extinguished by 5:45 a.m. No casualties were reported, and the cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
The incident echoes a pattern of infrastructure vulnerabilities that have plagued Ghana’s power sector. The recent Akosombo substation fire prompted calls from the Africa Sustainable Energy Centre for sweeping reforms in the country’s electricity transmission network, a recommendation that carries renewed urgency in light of events in Techiman. Capacitor banks, which regulate voltage and power flow in transmission systems, are critical components whose failure can cascade into wider disruptions.
Techiman, the capital of the Bono East Region, serves as a key node in the country’s northern power distribution network. Any extended outage at the GRIDCo station there could have affected electricity supply across several districts, making the rapid containment of the fire all the more consequential.
The Bono East Regional Public Relations Office of the GNFS commended the responding crew for their professionalism and speed. The Fire Service has in recent months been called upon to respond to a range of emergencies beyond traditional fire outbreaks, including flood rescues and the demolition of structurally compromised buildings, reflecting an expanding mandate that tests the capacity of regional stations.
While the absence of casualties is a relief, the recurrence of fires at power installations suggests that preventive maintenance and fire safety protocols at energy infrastructure sites deserve closer scrutiny. GRIDCo has not yet issued a public statement on the incident or indicated whether the affected capacitor bank has been restored to service.
