Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Awentami Paul Afoko, has donated 400 bags of cement and GH₢30,000 to support the completion of the party’s Volta Regional Headquarters, a gesture that underscores his renewed push for party unity ahead of the 2028 general election.
The donation follows a direct appeal made by the Volta Regional Executives during Mr Afoko’s recent visit to the region. Through the Regional Treasurer, the executives highlighted a pressing infrastructure challenge: the newly constructed regional secretariat’s compound lacked proper paving, leaving the area muddy and inaccessible whenever it rained.
Moved by the appeal, Mr Afoko described the facility as the most impressive NPP-owned regional headquarters in the country and pledged what he termed his “widow’s mite” towards its completion. The donation was presented on his behalf by David Apugiba, a former Hohoe Constituency Chairman, accompanied by the Secretary of the Council of Elders and other senior party figures.
Receiving the items, Volta Regional Treasurer Wisdom Gakpo expressed gratitude for the gesture and called on other party members to follow Mr Afoko’s example. “We thank Mr Awentami Paul Afoko for this timely gesture. We urge others to emulate his example as we collectively seek support to complete and maintain the party’s regional headquarters ahead of the 2028 general election,” Mr Gakpo said.
He was joined by Volta Regional Chairman Makafui Kofi Woanyah, who received the items alongside other regional executives at the party’s secretariat.
The donation carries political significance beyond its material value. Mr Afoko, who served as NPP National Chairman between 2014 and 2015 before his tenure was cut short by internal party disputes, is seeking a return to the position. His campaign is built around what he describes as the “3Rs” — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture — a platform that positions the contribution as both a practical act of support and a signal of his commitment to grassroots party infrastructure.
The Volta Region has historically been considered a stronghold of the ruling National Democratic Congress, making the construction of a permanent NPP regional headquarters a strategic priority for the opposition party as it seeks to broaden its base. The donation also arrives at a time when the NPP is undergoing a period of introspection and rebuilding following its defeat in the 2024 general election.
Contributions towards physical infrastructure, party insiders note, serve as tangible demonstrations of commitment that can influence internal contests for national leadership positions. Mr Afoko’s willingness to invest in regional party structures outside his home base may be read as an attempt to build goodwill across the party’s diverse regional chapters as he campaigns for the chairmanship.
