Two people, believed to include a child, are feared to have been swept away by floodwaters at Nurses Quarters Junction after attempting to cross the Kasoa–Domeabra road following the overflow of River Agyei in the Ga South Municipality.
Seth Serwonoo Banini, the Municipal Chief Executive for Awutu Senya East, disclosed that the information reaching his office has yet to be officially confirmed, but initial reports suggest the victims were an adult and a child. According to the MCE, the child was being carried across the flooded section when both were overpowered by the strong currents.
“The child was being carried by the floodwaters, and in an attempt by the adult to help, both were also swept away,” Mr Banini told Adom News, while assisting the Ga South Municipal Assembly in managing traffic and restoring movement on the affected stretch of road.
Heavy rains in the area caused River Agyei to breach its banks, submerging sections of the Kasoa–Domeabra road and bringing both vehicular and pedestrian transport to a standstill. The flooding left commuters stranded and created dangerous conditions for anyone attempting to navigate the submerged road.
Mr Banini also moved to correct earlier reports suggesting the incident occurred in Kasoa. “I want to clarify that the incident did not occur in Kasoa. It happened within the Ga South Municipality,” he stressed, urging media outlets and the public to ensure accuracy in their reporting of the incident.
Meanwhile, Nash Nyandey, the Awutu Senya East Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation, has called on residents living near riverbanks and major drains to remain especially vigilant, noting that the Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast continued rainfall in the coming days.
Mr Nyandey also cautioned against the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains, warning that the practice significantly worsens flooding and puts both lives and property at risk. “People should desist from dumping refuse into drains during rainfall. It contributes significantly to flooding,” he said.
The incident adds to a growing list of flood-related emergencies across Ghana’s urban centres, where rapid construction on floodplains and inadequate drainage infrastructure continue to leave communities vulnerable during the rainy season. Authorities have yet to confirm whether formal rescue operations have been launched to locate the two missing individuals.
