A tragic road accident involving a school bus has claimed the lives of two young pupils from the Alice Elites Academy, a preparatory school located at Assin Edubiase in the Assin South District of the Central Region, casting a pall of grief over the community.
The deceased, a boy and a girl, were among more than 40 schoolchildren travelling on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus when the vehicle was involved in an accident on the Assin Homaho road. The exact circumstances of the crash are still under investigation, but the scale of injuries has left families and school authorities devastated.
Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department Commander DSP Wonder Lumor confirmed the incident and provided details on the emergency response. A total of 40 injured children were rushed to nearby medical facilities immediately after the crash, with 22 transported to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital and the remaining 18 taken to the Assin Edubiase Health Centre.
In a subsequent update, DSP Lumor confirmed that all 40 injured pupils received medical treatment and have since been discharged to their respective families. While the physical injuries may heal, the emotional toll on the children, their parents, and the wider school community is likely to linger.
One of the parents, Douglas Odoom, spoke about the incident and its devastating impact on affected families, underscoring the raw grief that has gripped the community since the accident.
The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations, particularly for vehicles used to transport schoolchildren. Ghana’s road safety record remains a source of deep concern, with the National Road Safety Authority consistently reporting hundreds of fatalities each year. School transport, in particular, has come under scrutiny for issues ranging from overloading to poor vehicle maintenance.
Authorities have launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident. The findings will be closely watched by parents, education officials, and road safety advocates who have long argued that more must be done to protect children on their daily journeys to and from school.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has cast a dark cloud over the Assin Edubiase community, with families, residents and school authorities mourning the loss of the two young lives cut short in circumstances that, with better oversight, might have been prevented.
