Southampton and Royal Antwerp Mourn Death of Former Player Victor Udoh at 21

Sports

Southampton Football Club and Belgian side Royal Antwerp have announced the death of former academy player Victor Udoh at the age of 21.

The Nigerian left-winger, who had spells at both clubs before joining Czech second-tier side Ceske Budejovice, passed away this week. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Udoh joined Antwerp’s academy in 2023 and quickly made an impression, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances for their “Young Reds” team before earning a first-team debut in the same season. He went on to make 28 senior appearances for the Belgian club.

A Brief Spell on the South Coast

In February 2025, Udoh moved to Southampton’s academy, where he featured in eight matches for the under-21 side in Premier League 2 during a six-month stint. He left the club in September and subsequently signed with Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic.

“We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21,” Southampton posted on social media. “The thoughts of everyone at the club go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”

Royal Antwerp echoed those sentiments: “With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh. Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time.”

A Career Cut Short

Udoh’s career, though brief, showed genuine promise. His goal-scoring record at Antwerp’s youth level — nearly one in every two matches — marked him as a talent worth tracking, and his progression to first-team football in Belgium spoke to his ability.

The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the football community, with teammates, coaches and supporters remembering a young player whose potential was evident to all who worked with him.
