Professor Joseph Ofori-Dankwa, the H.R. Wickes Endowed Professor of Management at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan, has been recognised with the 2026 Lifetime Leadership Impact Award at the Youth Impact Leadership Summit in Accra.

The award was conferred on May 19 by Professor Benard Obeng Acquah, Dean of the Business School at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. It recognises Professor Ofori-Dankwa’s decades of work across academia, mentorship, entrepreneurship advocacy and humanitarian service in both Ghana and the United States.

Academically, Professor Ofori-Dankwa has carved out a distinctive niche. He is credited with pioneering influential research in leadership, organisational development, diversity and entrepreneurship. His most notable intellectual contribution is the concept of “DiverSimilarity” — a framework that argues organisations and individuals should value both demographic diversity and shared values in building stronger, more productive institutions. The concept has shaped multiple books, journal articles, seminars and international workshops.

His scholarship has also explored entrepreneurial processes and business practices across cultures, including comparative studies of Ghana and the United States. Notably, his research has highlighted the experiences of market women in Ghana, drawing attention to their challenges, strengths and the policy interventions needed to improve their economic welfare — a line of inquiry that remains underexplored in mainstream business academia.

Beyond the lecture hall, Professor Ofori-Dankwa has invested heavily in developing the next generation. Over the years, he has sponsored and provided scholarships for young people in both countries, helping them access educational and professional opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach. At Saginaw Valley State University, he co-founded the BATS Programme — Business, Arts, Theatre and Sociology — an interdisciplinary initiative that brings students from different academic backgrounds together to tackle real community challenges.

His contributions to international collaboration are equally significant. Professor Ofori-Dankwa was instrumental in establishing a sister-city relationship between Amanokrom in Ghana’s Eastern Region and Saginaw, Michigan. He also helped facilitate sister-university partnerships between Saginaw Valley State University and both Pentecost University and GIMPA, creating pathways for academic exchange and research collaboration that continue to benefit students and faculty on both sides of the Atlantic.

His longstanding relationship with Saginaw Valley State University also contributed to support for the establishment of a clinic at the Royal Seed Home, an orphanage in Ghana with which he has been actively involved for years.

In 2020, Professor Ofori-Dankwa received one of Michigan’s highest academic honours, the State of Michigan Distinguished Professor Award, recognising his exceptional contributions to teaching, research and community engagement.

The 2026 Lifetime Leadership Impact Award, organisers say, celebrates not only his academic achievements but a life of service dedicated to empowering people, building institutions, mentoring future leaders and creating lasting impact across communities and nations. In a career that has spanned continents and disciplines, Professor Ofori-Dankwa has demonstrated that the most enduring leadership is measured not in titles held but in lives changed.
