The APSU 2002 Year Group has announced the appointment of key leaders to steer the 97th anniversary celebrations of St Augustine’s College, the prestigious secondary school in Cape Coast whose alumni network remains one of the most active in Ghana.

George Baffour Asare-Afriyie, a lawyer and international maritime expert, and Dr Linus Kweku Labik, an astrophysicist at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, have been named as Co-Chairmen of the anniversary hosting and BOLT Steering Committee. Raymond Andoh, an ICT engineer with over 17 years of experience in the mining sector, will serve as Vice Chairman.

The appointments, which take immediate effect, mark a transition into the implementation phase of the Committee’s mandate as it prepares for what is expected to be a major gathering of alumni from across Ghana and the diaspora.

Mr Asare-Afriyie brings an unusual blend of legal and maritime expertise to the role. He holds an LL.M. in Maritime Law from Tulane Law School and has served on the Legal Committee of the International Maritime Organisation. He currently serves as Assistant Secretary of APSU USA and is a member of both the Ghana Bar Association and the International Bar Association.

Dr Labik, whose research at KNUST focuses on planetary formation and the evolution of porosity during dust coagulation, has served as Convenor of the APSU 2002 Year Group since December 2019. He is also the Principal Investigator of the AstroXMat Research Lab and provides technical support to the National Hilal Committee for the scientific sighting of the crescent moon.

Mr Andoh, the Vice Chairman, holds a BSc in Information Technology and is a Microsoft Certified Professional with additional certifications in project management and risk management. Beyond his technical career, he has served since 2012 as Abakomahene of the Mampongso Divisional Area in the Western Region.

Bernard Abaka Acheampong, who has served as founding Convener of the year group for ten years and as Secretary for two terms, will continue as Secretary to the Planning Committee. He has been a member of the National Executive Council of APSU National for eighteen years.

St Augustine’s College, founded in 1930, is one of Ghana’s oldest and most respected secondary schools. Its alumni association, known as APSU (Aggrey, Papafio, St Augustine’s Union), has a reputation for mobilising resources and maintaining strong bonds among former students across generations.

The Executive Committee expressed full confidence in the appointees’ ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to deliver a successful anniversary celebration that honours the school’s legacy while strengthening the network for future generations.
