Fordjour Urges Teacher Allowances to Boost Student Scores

Former Deputy Minister of Education Rev. John Ntim Fordjour urged the government on Thursday to immediately release pending funds to the Ministry of Education and clear all outstanding teacher allowances, calling the measures essential for improving student performance nationwide.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Fordjour stressed that without proper motivation and timely remuneration, teachers cannot be expected to deliver stronger learning outcomes.

“The best course of action is that funding must be released to the Ministry of Education to drive outcomes in our education system. Teachers should also be paid their allowances,” he said.

He cautioned the administration against blaming teachers for poor academic results, insisting that collaboration, not confrontation, is needed to lift the sector.

Fordjour also advocated for deeper partnerships with mission schools, noting that these institutions consistently produce some of the nation’s top‑performing students.

“The government should work with teachers instead of blaming them for students’ poor performance. Rather than assigning blame, the focus should be on motivating teachers to help students succeed,” he added.

“The government should also build positive partnerships with mission schools because they often have the highest‑performing students,” he continued.

Education Ministry officials have not yet responded to the remarks. Analysts say that releasing the blocked funds and settling allowances could alleviate cash‑flow pressures on schools and potentially boost morale among educators, which may translate into better classroom results.

The call comes amid ongoing concerns about budgetary delays that have left several districts awaiting critical resources for infrastructure, learning materials, and teacher welfare.

Stakeholders expect the government to clarify its timeline for disbursement, as the education sector seeks a concerted effort to raise Ghana’s academic standards.
