The Tema industrial park project has taken a decisive step forward as the government incorporates the Tema Integrated Industrial Parks Company Limited (TIIPCo), a joint venture poised to reshape Ghana’s manufacturing landscape and position the country as a competitive hub for industrial activity in West Africa.

The incorporation of TIIPCo in April 2026 marks a significant milestone in President John Dramani Mahama’s broader agenda to accelerate industrialisation, create sustainable jobs and promote local value addition across the country’s key economic sectors.

What the Tema Industrial Park Joint Venture Entails

TIIPCo brings together three powerful entities in a public-private partnership designed to deliver world-class industrial infrastructure. The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC), TDC Ghana Ltd and ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms have each committed resources and expertise to the Tema industrial park initiative.

According to a statement issued by GIADEC, TDC Ghana Ltd has already granted TIIPCo a Right of Entry to the designated land, and site preparation works have commenced ahead of full-scale construction. The facility is expected to occupy between 100 and 120 hectares of land near the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) smelter, strategically positioning the park within Ghana’s existing industrial ecosystem.

The development followed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and a Shareholders’ Agreement among the three partners, formalising their commitment to advancing Ghana’s industrial transformation agenda through the Tema industrial park.

How the Tema Industrial Park Will Transform Ghana’s Manufacturing Sector

The Tema industrial park is designed to provide modern infrastructure that will attract both domestic and foreign investment, support the local processing of raw materials and enhance Ghana’s export competitiveness. This aligns with the government’s broader objective of promoting sustainable industrial growth through strategic public-private partnerships.

ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms, described as a pan-African developer and operator of industrial ecosystems, is expected to bring substantial expertise to the project. The company currently operates industrial ecosystems in 15 African countries, with five already operational and nine under construction, including projects across the continent.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment among the partners to support Ghana’s industrial development through modern infrastructure. By enabling local processing of raw materials, the Tema industrial park is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on exporting unprocessed commodities and create higher-value economic opportunities for Ghanaians.

This development is particularly significant for the Tema Heavy Industrial Area, which has long served as Ghana’s primary industrial zone. The transformation of this area into a strategic manufacturing and processing enclave represents a major upgrade to the country’s industrial capacity. Residents and businesses in Tema should also be aware of ongoing power interruptions linked to GRIDCo’s Smelter II maintenance, which may affect operations in the short term.

GIADEC’s Role in the Tema Industrial Park Development

GIADEC plays a central role in the Tema industrial park project. The corporation was established under the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation Act, 2018 (Act 976), to develop and promote a globally competitive integrated aluminium industry in the country.

The corporation manages government interests across the aluminium value chain, including shareholding in VALCO and the Ghana Bauxite Company Limited. GIADEC’s involvement in the Tema industrial park signals the government’s intention to leverage Ghana’s aluminium resources for broader industrial development.

Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah, CEO of GIADEC, has been instrumental in driving the partnership forward. The corporation’s expertise in aluminium development positions it as a key enabler of the park’s potential to attract investment in metal processing and related manufacturing activities.

TDC Ghana’s Legacy and the Future of Tema’s Industrial Infrastructure

TDC Ghana Ltd, established in 1952, remains one of the country’s key state institutions responsible for the planning and development of Tema and its industrial infrastructure. The company’s involvement in the Tema industrial park ensures that the project benefits from decades of experience in urban and industrial planning.

TDC’s grant of a Right of Entry to the designated land demonstrates the institutional support backing the project. The company’s role in managing Tema’s development gives it unique insight into the infrastructure requirements needed to support large-scale industrial operations.

What’s Next: Sod-Cutting Ceremony and Project Timeline

A sod-cutting ceremony to officially launch the Tema industrial park project is expected to be performed by President Mahama in the coming weeks. This event will signal the transition from planning and preparation to active construction.

The project aligns with President Mahama’s broader vision for Ghana’s economic transformation. By creating a world-class industrial hub in Tema, the government aims to position Ghana as a preferred destination for manufacturing investment in Africa. The initiative also complements other government efforts to boost industrial transformation through technical university funding.

The Tema industrial park is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, both during the construction phase and once the facility becomes fully operational. The park’s focus on local processing of raw materials also promises to create value chain opportunities for Ghanaian businesses and workers.

As the project moves forward, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the partnership between GIADEC, TDC Ghana and ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms unfolds and delivers on its promise of transforming Ghana’s industrial landscape.
