Aowin MP Issues Second Apology Over Galamsey Claims

Politics

Aowin MP Oscar Ofori Larbi has issued a fresh apology, aiming to end a months‑long impasse with the Aowin Traditional Council after his earlier comments linked chiefs to illegal mining.

The dispute, which began in early 2025 when the MP suggested some traditional leaders were complicit in galamsey, led the council to ban him from entering the constituency, stalling development projects.

Adom TV’s Western North correspondent Augustine Boah reported that the ban has effectively paralysed the MP’s ability to perform his duties, prompting several failed mediation attempts.

In a diplomatic breakthrough, newly installed Mmratehene (Youth Chief) Nana Kwame Asare Bimpong, together with local youth groups, engaged the MP directly to seek forgiveness.

During the meeting, Oscar Ofori Larbi retracted his earlier statement and said, \”I sincerely acknowledge that my comments implicating the chiefs in illegal mining were regrettable. I subsequently retract the statement and offer a fresh apology to the council, appealing for forgiveness and cooperation for the advancement of Aowin,\” he declared.

The youth chief responded, \”I urge the traditional council to accept the MP’s apology in the interest of unity and development,\” highlighting the need for communal harmony.

Stakeholders fear that prolonged friction could hamper Aowin’s cocoa and mineral projects, which rely on collaboration between elected officials and traditional authorities.

The Traditional Council’s next decision will determine whether the MP can resume full representation of his constituents and accelerate pending infrastructure and social initiatives.
