Farmer jailed 15 years for sexually abusing 14-year-old niece

A 45-year-old farmer, Agbeko Ametame, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Sogakope Circuit Court for defiling his 14-year-old niece at Mafi-Dzabukpo in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region.

Ametame pleaded guilty to two counts of incest and defilement of a child under 16 years, contrary to Sections 105 and 101 of the Criminal Offences Act 29/60 as amended.

According to L/CPL Kukubor Gifty of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), the victim, now six months pregnant, had lived with Ametame since she was three, believing him to be her father.

The prosecutor noted that Ametame began having sexual intercourse with the victim when she was 11, leading to pregnancy, and instructed her to conceal the circumstances of her pregnancy.

The matter came to light when teachers at the victim’s school observed physical changes and questioned her, prompting a report to community leaders and the DOVVSU in Sogakope.

A medical form was issued for the victim, and Ametame was later arrested. After examining the facts, the court handed down a 15-year custodial sentence.
