West Africa’s Coup Wave Forces Ghana to Rethink Politics Now

Security officials confirmed this morning that an attempted coup unfolded in Benin, adding to a string of destabilising events across francophone West Africa that threaten Ghana’s stability.

The failed takeover in Benin follows a near‑miss coup in Togo last week and comes amid rising unrest in Ivory Coast, Mauritania and Niger, while Mali’s militants regroup and Chad wrestles with internal dissent.

Analyst Dr. Kwesi Mensah, senior fellow at the Institute of African Studies, said, “The spate of attempted coups signals a heightened risk for neighboring Ghana and demands immediate vigilance from our security agencies.”

These developments echo a broader regional pattern rooted in the colonial legacy of French assimilation, which dismantled indigenous governance structures and left many states dependent on external frameworks.

Unlike Britain’s indirect rule that preserved fragments of traditional authority, France’s policy erased local leadership, creating a void that post‑independence governments have struggled to fill.

Thinkers such as Aimé Césaire, Léopold Sédar Senghor and Cheikh Anta Diop highlighted the cultural dislocation caused by assimilation, a wound that continues to undermine political legitimacy in several francophone nations.

Ghana’s own democratic credentials are under scrutiny as the ECOWAS bloc, tasked with regional stability, appears compromised and slow to respond to the cascade of coups.

Security experts warn that instability is contagious; borders are porous and intelligence networks must shift from reactive to proactive measures to safeguard Ghana’s internal cohesion.

Domestic challenges—political polarisation, economic distress, youth disenchantment and fragile institutions—mirror the pressures that have toppled governments elsewhere in the sub‑region.

As West Africa enters a new historical phase, Ghana must watch, prepare and reinforce its political resilience to prevent spill‑over effects from the unfolding crisis.
