PSG Stunned by Athletic Club in Underwhelming Draw

International

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the reigning European champions, were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Athletic Club in their Champions League clash at San Mames on Tuesday night.

Despite dominating possession and creating several clear-cut opportunities, Luis Enrique’s side couldn’t find a way past the inspired Athletic Club goalkeeper, Unai Simon. The result leaves PSG in third place, just one point within the top eight, while their opponents are 28th and facing an uphill battle for qualification.

Fabian Ruiz was guilty of wasting two promising chances, sending his efforts over the bar. Simon also proved to be a formidable barrier, making crucial saves to deny Senny Mayulu both before and after the break.

The Parisian side’s best opportunity fell to Bradley Barcola, who surged through on goal but saw his powerful shot crash against the crossbar. Late in the game, Ruiz again tested Simon, but the Spain international was equal to the task, with Yuri Berchiche on hand to clear the rebound off the line.

Athletic Club, who managed only one shot on target throughout the match – a late attempt from Asier Hierro – remain two points off the Champions League playoff places. The Bilbao-based team will need to improve their attacking output if they are to stand a chance of progressing.

While the draw isn’t a disaster for PSG, Enrique will be concerned by their inability to convert dominance into goals. They will look to secure a win in their next match to solidify their position in the competition.
