President John Mahama on Wednesday, December 17, launched the Ho Oxygen City Project, a landmark initiative poised to redefine urban development in the Volta Region and beyond.

The sod-cutting ceremony, held at the project site, drew a significant crowd including government officials, representatives from TDC Ghana Limited, development partners, traditional leaders, and the media.

Addressing attendees, President Mahama emphasized that the project embodies a national vision for inclusive growth, balanced regional development, and people-centered governance. “We are not here merely to acquire land for another housing project. We are here to pursue a national vision, one anchored in inclusive development, balanced growth, and dignified governance as a foundation for lasting transformation,” he stated.

He further highlighted the collaborative spirit driving the project, noting that partnerships between state institutions, traditional authorities, and the private sector are crucial for responsible land use, comprehensive planning, and the creation of sustainable communities. “Through such partnerships, land can be responsibly unlocked, comprehensive planning enforced, and communities created that integrate housing, transport, social services, and environmental sustainability,” the President added.

The President underscored the importance of ensuring that national projects translate into tangible benefits for local communities, creating employment opportunities for the youth and fostering entrepreneurship.

Minister for Works, Housing, and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, described the Oxygen City Project as a strategic undertaking designed to expand opportunities, bolster regional economies, and build resilient communities. “Oxygen City represents integrated, future-ready urban development. It combines residential neighbourhoods with commercial, industrial, and health-tourism facilities while incorporating green corridors, efficient infrastructure, and environmentally conscious design,” the Minister explained.

The project’s strategic location near the Ho Airport and major road networks is expected to position the Volta Region as a key regional growth hub, attracting investment and stimulating economic activity.

Mr. Adjei also commended TDC Ghana Limited’s move to expand its operations beyond the Tema industrial area, describing it as a demonstration of national responsibility and institutional growth.

Courage K. Nunekpeku, Managing Director of TDC, revealed the company’s ambitious expansion plans, extending beyond Tema and the Volta Region. He emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships in overcoming challenges.

Mr. Nunekpeku announced that the Ministry of Finance has approved major redevelopment projects, including the construction of ten 15-story buildings at Kaiser Flats and ten 10-story buildings at Italian Flats, totaling 30 structures. He also mentioned ongoing discussions to convert underutilized buildings into high-rise developments.

He further detailed operational reforms at TDC, including 24-hour service delivery, courier services, and departmental restructuring aimed at enhancing efficiency. “TDC is poised, and TDC is back. Our focus is action, action, and action,” he declared, highlighting the affordable housing project at Committee 26, which will deliver 802 self-contained bedrooms – a first for the company.

The Ho Oxygen City Project is anticipated to serve as a blueprint for integrated urban development across Ghana, combining strategic planning, economic empowerment, and improved living standards for future generations.
