Manchester City demonstrated resilience and quality to overcome Real Madrid 3-2 in a thrilling Champions League encounter at the Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday evening.
The win, a significant boost for Pep Guardiola’s side, comes at a critical juncture for Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, who now finds his position under considerable scrutiny following a recent dip in La Liga form and reports of tension within the squad.
Real Madrid were dealt a blow before kickoff with star striker Kylian Mbappé only deemed fit enough for the bench, and he ultimately remained unused as his team succumbed to defeat.
The match began controversially with a penalty awarded to Real Madrid within the first two minutes for a challenge on Vinicius Jr. However, VAR intervened, deeming the foul to have occurred outside the box. Federico Valverde then came close to opening the scoring from the resulting free-kick, his attempt deflecting just wide. Vinicius Jr. also had an early opportunity but shot wide.
Against the run of play, Real Madrid took the lead through Rodrygo, who expertly finished after a cross-field pass from Jude Bellingham, marking his first goal since January.
City responded swiftly, leveling the score just seven minutes later. Academy left-back Nico O’Reilly poked the ball home from close range after Josko Gvardiol’s header was parried into his path by Thibaut Courtois.
The visitors completed the turnaround on the stroke of half-time when Erling Haaland confidently converted a penalty, awarded after he was brought down by Antonio Rudiger. Courtois did brilliantly to deny Haaland a second just before the break.
The second half saw Real Madrid push for an equalizer. Bellingham chipped over the bar, and substitute Endrick’s header clipped the crossbar, but City’s defense held firm.
Haaland now boasts an impressive 55 goals in the Champions League since his debut for RB Salzburg in 2019, more than any other player in that period.
City, building momentum, overcame their recent defeat to Bayer Leverkusen and now sit fourth in their group. They are well-placed to secure a crucial top-eight finish with upcoming matches against Bodo/Glimt and Galatasaray.
“We showed excellent character tonight,” said Pep Guardiola in a post-match interview. “It is a difficult place to come and get a result, and the team responded brilliantly to going behind.”
The defeat leaves Real Madrid seventh in the table and raises serious questions about Alonso’s future. As BBC Sport’s Guillem Balague previously indicated, Alonso’s position was already “slim”. A post-match board meeting only adds to the mounting pressure.
This encounter also marked the first managerial clash between Alonso and Guardiola since their time together at Bayern Munich, a meeting that could have significant consequences for Alonso’s career.
