Kenya U17 oust Uganda on away goals to inch closer to FIFA U17 Women's World Cup qualification

Kenya’s U17 women’s national team, the Junior Starlets, survived a tense second leg against East African rivals Uganda to progress on the away goals rule and move one step closer to qualifying for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

The two-legged tie between the neighbouring nations went down to the wire, with Uganda — known as the Teen Cranes — pushing hard for the decisive goal that would have swung the aggregate in their favour. But Kenya’s defensive resilience, anchored by captain Beverline Awuor, proved just enough to see the Junior Starlets through.

Uganda’s Late Surge Falls Short

The second leg was a cagey affair that opened up in the closing stages. Uganda came agonisingly close to overturning the deficit when Shadia Nabirye carved open the Kenyan defence with a threaded pass into the path of Immaculate Achen, who found herself through on goal. But Awuor produced a superb recovery run to dispossess the forward and snuff out the danger.

The Teen Cranes pressed again in the 76th minute, creating another gilt-edged chance that went begging. For Uganda, the inability to convert those opportunities will sting — particularly given the quality of football they produced in the final third.

Kenya, for their part, showed the composure and tactical discipline that has characterised their campaign. The Junior Starlets defended deep when necessary and broke with purpose when the opportunity arose, doing just enough across the two legs to advance on the away goals tiebreaker.

A Growing Force in African Women’s Youth Football

The result marks another significant step for Kenyan women’s football at the youth level. The Junior Starlets have steadily built a reputation as one of East Africa’s most competitive youth programmes, and their progression in this qualifying cycle reinforces that standing.

For Uganda, the defeat is a setback but not a disaster. The Teen Cranes showed enough quality across the two legs to suggest that their own women’s football development is heading in the right direction, even if the final result did not go their way.

Kenya now await their next opponents in the qualifying campaign, with the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup drawing ever closer. The Junior Starlets will need to maintain the defensive solidity that saw them through against Uganda if they are to book a place on the world stage.
