On June 25, 2026, the Parliament of Ghana commenced a four-day International Data Masterclass in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) and the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS). The workshop, themed “Advancing Evidence-based Parliament: Leveraging Data for Better Decision-Making,” aims to strengthen legislators’ capacity in applying statistics to debates and policy decisions.
At the opening ceremony, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga emphasized the training’s role in helping legislators understand societal problems and apply statistical analysis in their routine work. He urged research officers, clerks of committees, and the Research Department to build their capacity to support MPs effectively.
First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor underscored the importance of evidence-based statistics in public policy, urging MPs to distinguish between opinion and fact. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, Clerk to Parliament, noted the collaboration signals a growing emphasis on data-driven governance.
Acting Government Statistician Francis Bright Mensah stressed that timely and reliable data equips legislators to scrutinise policy, allocate resources, and hold institutions accountable. Dr. Rashid Dramani of the African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs urged Parliament to institutionalise the gains of the Masterclass.
Deputy British High Commissioner Terri Sarch reaffirmed the UK’s commitment through the ONS to support MPs in applying data and evidence in legislative work, oversight, and policy formulation.
