Affail Monney Calls for a Hard Review of OSP

Politics

Former Ghana Journalists Association president Roland Affail Monney urged Ghana to take a hard look at the Office of the Special Prosecutor during a JoyNews AM interview on Monday, Dec 8.

Monney said the OSP has become “common knowledge” for being “rich in spectacle but poor in delivery,” a sentiment he said resonates with many Ghanaians who feel the country is not getting value for money from the institution.

“I have listened to CDD, I have analysed the comments by people who share the view of CDD,” he explained, noting that he has followed every argument about whether the OSP should be maintained or scrapped.

The former GJA chief also referenced the position of ex‑Speaker of Parliament Professor Mike Oquaye, describing him as “a seasoned lawyer and experienced statesman whose comments should not be taken for granted.”

According to Monney, Professor Oquaye believes the OSP is a duplication of existing mechanisms and that Ghana should “do away with this office.” He added that such a view reinforces the need for a thorough examination of whether the OSP fulfills its original mandate.

“In this reinforcing, there is the need to take a hard and long look at that office and see whether it is fulfilling the mandate for which it was established,” Monney stressed.

Concluding his remarks, Monney called for a non‑partisan national approach: “As a nation, this is the time for us to come together, devoid of political perspectives. Let’s put on nationalistic lenses to examine and scrutinise whether Ghana as a nation deserves this Office of the Special Prosecutor.”
