Fenerbahce Presidential Rivals Both Target Greenwood in Transfer Battle

Sports

The race for the Fenerbahce presidency has taken an unexpected turn, with both candidates identifying Mason Greenwood as their marquee transfer target ahead of a crucial announcement due on Sunday.

Former president Aziz Yildirim and challenger Hakan Safi are vying for control of the Istanbul-based club, and both have made the acquisition of the Marseille forward a centrepiece of their sporting vision. The convergence of interest underscores the 24-year-olds enduring appeal despite a turbulent period that has followed him from Manchester to the south of France.

Greenwoods time at Marseille appears to be drawing to a close after the clubs new sporting director, Gregory Lorenzi, publicly stated last week that the Ligue 1 side would listen to offers for the striker. He has three years remaining on the five-year contract he signed when he left Manchester United on a permanent basis in July 2024, a deal that included what United sources described as a sizeable sell-on fee worth 31.6 million euros.

Despite the off-field turbulence, Greenwoods output on the pitch has been formidable. He scored 48 goals in 81 appearances for Marseille and finished joint second in the Ligue 1 golden boot standings this season with 16 goals, trailing only Rennes Esteban Lepaul. Those numbers have kept his market value robust even as questions about his long-term future in France intensified.

The Turkish Super Lig presents a compelling destination. Fenerbahce finished second for the fifth successive season and will enter the Champions League at the second qualifying round in July, offering Greenwood a stage that Marseille cannot match. It is not anticipated that personal terms would pose a significant obstacle.

Greenwood has had to rebuild his career away from Old Trafford after charges of attempted rape and assault were dropped in February 2023. An internal investigation at Manchester United concluded he could not play for the club again, leading to an initial loan move to Getafe before the permanent switch to Marseille. He has also been linked with Serie A side Roma in recent days, though the Turkish route now appears the most advanced.

The transfer saga carries broader significance for Fenerbahces future direction. Whichever candidate prevails on Sunday will inherit not just the presidency but the expectation of delivering Greenwood as a statement of intent. In a league that has increasingly attracted high-profile names, landing a player of his calibre would represent a significant coup and a signal that Fenerbahce intend to end their long wait for a league title.

For Greenwood himself, a move to Istanbul would mark the latest chapter in a career that has been defined as much by controversy as by talent. At 24, he still has time to write a different narrative, but the weight of his past ensures that wherever he goes, scrutiny will follow.
