The ECOWAS Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the African Union (AU) chairmanship in 2027.
This significant endorsement occurred during a meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, and was announced by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on his Facebook page on Friday, December 12. Mr. Ablakwa indicated that the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS is scheduled to formally adopt this declaration on Sunday.
“Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” the Minister stated.
The AU chairmanship comprises two key roles. The rotating Chairperson, a Head of State serving a one-year term, provides high-level political leadership. The Chairperson of the AU Commission, functioning as the organisation’s CEO and legal representative, is elected for a four-year term and oversees the daily operations of the AU, requiring a two-thirds majority vote from member states.
According to information available, the Commission Chairperson is responsible for managing the AU’s finances, implementing policies, and reporting to the Executive Council, effectively driving the continental agenda.
The election process for the AU Commission Chairperson is rigorous. Candidates undergo initial screening by a Panel of Eminent Africans, evaluating their skills, experience, and suitability. Regional blocs then nominate their preferred candidates; for example, the Eastern Region handled nominations for the 2025 cycle.
In recent years, televised debates have become a crucial part of the process, allowing aspirants to present their visions for Africa and engage with the public. However, the ultimate decision rests with the AU Assembly, which elects the Chairperson through a secret ballot requiring a two-thirds majority.
While the rotating AU Chairperson sets the overall political direction, the AUC Chairperson is the operational leader, ensuring the AU’s vision translates into tangible results across the continent.
