Leaders from across Africa convened in Accra today for the opening of the African Summit 2025, issuing a powerful call for the continent to take charge of its own destiny.
The summit, themed “Building a New United Africa,” is focused on key areas like youth empowerment, forging strategic partnerships, and maximizing the benefits of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to drive the continent’s next phase of growth.
Speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized the need for African nations to fully embrace the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA. “Africa must move from being a passive observer to an active shaper of global outcomes,” he stated.
According to Minister Ablakwa, achieving this requires a unified African voice, strategic diplomacy, and collaborative economic efforts. He highlighted the AfCFTA’s potential to lift millions out of poverty, create employment for the continent’s burgeoning youth population, and boost industrial capacity.
However, he cautioned that the success of the AfCFTA hinges on the collective commitment of African countries to dismantle trade barriers, harmonize regulations, invest in vital infrastructure, and provide support for small and medium-sized enterprises to thrive in a competitive cross-border market.
Organisers of the summit explained that the gathering aims to align Africa’s economic and political vision and mobilize coordinated, African-led action, particularly as global power dynamics shift and international interest in Africa’s resources intensifies.
The summit brings together political leaders, policymakers, and business executives to address the continent’s development challenges and explore avenues for greater integration.
