The Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has urged the government to adopt a more measured diplomatic approach in its dealings with Israel, following recent tensions over deportations.
Mr. Jinapor’s call comes after Ghanaian nationals were deported from Tel Aviv, prompting a reciprocal deportation of three Israelis who arrived in Accra on December 10. While the Minority supports efforts to protect Ghanaians abroad, he cautioned that the current situation demands careful handling.
“Any effort by the Government of Ghana to protect the interest of Ghanaians abroad and safeguard the dignity of Ghanaians should be welcomed. The Minority welcomes such effort,” he stated.
However, the Ranking Member advised Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to exercise restraint in public commentary, warning that it could escalate the tensions. “It is important that we call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs to take the path of quiet, calm and strategic diplomacy in dealing with some of these matters,” Jinapor stressed.
He highlighted the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Ghana and Israel, which dates back to 1956, emphasizing the need to preserve Ghana’s reputation for balanced and principled foreign policy.
The situation was further complicated when Minister Ablakwa publicly stated that Israel had apologized for the treatment of Ghanaian deportees, a claim the Israeli Embassy in Accra swiftly denied. Mr. Jinapor expressed concern over these conflicting statements.
“His conduct and public rows as Minister for Foreign Affairs is becoming one too many. The issue relating to the apology and denial by the Israeli Embassy is very disturbing and potentially embarrassing,” he said.
The Damongo lawmaker warned that the Minister’s current approach could harm Ghana’s broader national interests. “Ghana’s foreign policy response must be guided by sound judgement, prudence and measured engagement through the appropriate diplomatic channels,” he affirmed.
Mr. Jinapor indicated that the Minority will raise the issue in Parliament and seek clarification from the Minister for Foreign Affairs on the matter.
