Accra floods are self-inflicted and avoidable – CPP urges urgent government action

Politics

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by the heavy downpour that struck Accra on Monday, June 29, 2026, describing the flooding as a “self‑inflicted” disaster that could have been avoided through proactive governance.

In a forceful statement, the party criticised successive administrations for neglecting long‑standing challenges such as indiscriminate construction on waterways and the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage systems. These practices, the CPP argued, have turned what should be a seasonal boon for agriculture into a recurring catastrophe that claims lives and destroys property worth millions of cedis, with further rainfall anticipated in the days ahead.

The CPP therefore urged the government to immediately deploy the Ghana Navy, all available speedboats and the Blue Water Guards to conduct rescue operations and safeguard lives and property. “The government of Ghana owes it as an emergency duty to act swiftly,” the statement declared.

Additionally, the party called on the Minister for Energy, John Jinapor, to order the immediate disconnection of electricity supply to all flooded zones where water has reached power poles and installations, thereby eliminating the risk of electrocution.

The appeal emphasized a coordinated “all‑hands‑on‑deck” response involving security services, technical experts and community volunteers to mitigate the ongoing crisis. The CPP also urged citizens to remain calm, avoid flood‑prone areas and keep praying for the safety of all affected residents.

This appeal follows earlier warnings about inadequate flood preparedness, including the government’s own outline of aggressive anti‑flood measures (Govt outlines aggressive anti‑flood measures as devastating rains submerge Accra and Tema) and the necessity of removing structures that obstruct waterways (Flood Crisis: Mahama Orders Removal of Structures in Waterways). Without urgent intervention to address the root causes—unplanned development and poor waste management—the cycle of devastation will continue to exact a heavy toll on the nation.
