Anthony Gordon Completes £69m Move to Barcelona, Fulfilling Childhood Dream

Anthony Gordon has completed his long-anticipated move to Barcelona from Newcastle United, signing a contract through 2031 in a deal worth more than €80 million (£69.3 million). The 25-year-old England forward was officially presented at the Spotify Camp Nou on Friday after a protracted wait caused by paperwork delays, capping a transfer saga that had intensified over the past week amid competing interest from Bayern Munich.

Gordon, who spoke in Spanish during his unveiling, told reporters that playing for Barcelona had been an ambition since earliest childhood. “I was excited to play for Barca since I was three years of age,” he said. “I found out very late, but as soon as I knew Barca were a serious option, there was not any question. Barca are the biggest club on the planet.”

The forward revealed that his commitment to the move predated formal negotiations by decades. While at Newcastle, Gordon had been taking Spanish lessons from a club physiotherapist, convinced that one day he would wear the Blaugrana shirt. “I told him, one day I will play for Barca, so I want to learn Spanish,” Gordon recounted. That conviction proved well-founded when Barcelona came calling this spring.

Gordon’s departure marks the end of a transformative three-and-a-half-year spell at St James’ Park. Signed from Everton in January 2023, he made 152 appearances for Newcastle and was the club’s top scorer this season with 17 goals across all competitions. His contributions were instrumental in restoring Newcastle’s competitiveness in the Premier League and in European competition.

“I owe this club a lot because, when I arrived, I was quite lost both in life and in football,” Gordon said in a farewell message published on Newcastle’s website. “The club has given me a sense of belonging and a sense of identity. It has allowed me to do what I always thought I could do.”

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe acknowledged the significance of the loss while wishing Gordon well. “While we are disappointed to lose Anthony, we understand that this is a big opportunity for him,” Howe said. “He leaves with our best wishes, and I am confident that he will go on to be a success, both with Barcelona and the national team at this year’s World Cup.”

The timing of the transfer is notable. Gordon will fly out with the England squad to the United States on Monday for a pre-World Cup training camp, with the tournament beginning on 11 June. He joins compatriot Marcus Rashford at Barcelona, though the Spanish champions have yet to exercise their option to make Rashford’s loan from Manchester United permanent for £26 million.

Newcastle were in a strong negotiating position, with Gordon still under contract for four more years. Despite being left on the bench for the final four Premier League matches of the season, he received an emotional send-off from supporters who briefly chanted his name following the 2-0 defeat at Fulham on the final day.

Everton stand to benefit financially from the transaction, with the Merseyside club entitled to 15 percent of any profit Newcastle made on the player they sold for up to £45 million in 2023. The deal underscores the escalating transfer market valuations for English forwards and Barcelona’s determination to reinforce their squad after retaining the La Liga title.

For Gordon, who has earned regular England caps and will enter the World Cup as a newly minted Barcelona player, the move represents both a professional elevation and the fulfilment of a personal prophecy made more than two decades ago in Liverpool.
