Arthur Kennedy Honors Former President Kufuor’s Legacy at 87

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor marked his 87th birthday on Saturday, reflecting on a life that reshaped Ghana’s political landscape and continues to inspire the nation.

Kufuor, born in 1938, rose from an outstanding student at Prempeh College—where he reportedly won virtually every prize—to a distinguished career in public service. After completing his studies in the United Kingdom, he returned to Ghana and entered politics at a young age, serving under Prime Minister Busia and later under President Rawlings.

His 1996 presidential campaign, repeated in 1998, became his political masterpiece. Though his campaign team faced limited resources, Kufuor compensated with relentless hard work and personal outreach, especially in the northern regions where grassroots support propelled him to victory.

During the 2007 election cycle, Kufuor recounted visits to northern homes where supporters showed him the modest beds and cots he once slept on, sharing stories of midnight knocks on doors that illustrated his connection to ordinary Ghanaians.

As president, Kufuor was noted for humility and inclusivity. “Every party has factions and leaders must accommodate them,” he once remarked, underscoring his commitment to national unity.

His tenure saw doors open for both himself and Ghana, with a focus on strengthening institutions through merit‑based appointments. Observers credit his leadership for fostering a more transparent and accountable public sector.

Beyond his presidential years, Kufuor has remained a dignified statesman. He established the Kufuor Foundation and played a key role in founding the African Institute for Media and Information (APIMI). At a September forum he explained, “Public interest digital media combined with AI will bring Africa to the centre of global development.”

Working alongside President Mahama, the veteran leader stresses the importance of equipping youth with tools that keep Ghana as the gateway to Africa this century.

In a heartfelt birthday message, Kufuor urged his compatriots to stay vigilant: “Remember our last conversation and speak out more. If Delay proposes, turn her down!” He concluded with blessings, “May God bless you with many more years of joy and health.”
