Maverick Research Taps Former NielsenIQ Executive Justin Sargent as Strategic Advisor

Technology

African market intelligence firm Maverick Research has appointed Justin Sargent, a former senior executive at NielsenIQ, as its strategic advisor, a move that signals the company’s ambition to deepen its footprint across the continent’s fast-evolving consumer landscape.

Sargent brings more than three decades of global experience spanning consumer goods, data analytics, commercial strategy, and business transformation. He spent much of his career in senior roles at Procter and Gamble before moving to NielsenIQ, where he held leadership positions across Asia Pacific and Global Commercial Strategy.

The appointment comes as Maverick Research positions itself for what Managing Principal Ato Micah described as the next phase of the company’s growth. The firm currently tracks more than 15,000 stock-keeping units monthly across over 60 fast-moving consumer goods categories in West and Central Africa, a market that has become a focal point for multinational brands and investors alike.

“Maverick has experienced significant growth over the past several years, expanding our geographic footprint, strengthening our capabilities, and investing heavily in technology, data, and talent,” Micah said. “As we prepare for the next phase of our journey, Justin’s global experience and strategic perspective will be invaluable.”

Africa’s Data Deficit

The hire reflects a broader trend in Africa’s business ecosystem: the growing demand for reliable, granular market data in a region where consumer behaviour has historically been poorly documented. Companies operating across the continent have long struggled with fragmented retail landscapes, informal distribution channels, and a scarcity of the kind of point-of-sale data that drives decision-making in more mature markets.

Maverick Research has carved out a niche by offering retail audit services, consumer insights, and market intelligence to manufacturers, retailers, and investors in sectors ranging from consumer goods to telecommunications and agriculture. Ghana’s recent push to establish itself as a preferred outsourcing and digital services hub underscores the country’s growing importance as a base for data-driven business services on the continent.

Strategic Implications

Sargent’s appointment is expected to accelerate Maverick’s expansion across Africa, enhance its technology and data capabilities, and deepen strategic partnerships with both multinational and local organisations. His track record of driving commercial transformation during periods of industry change will be particularly relevant as the African consumer goods market undergoes rapid digitalisation.

The firm’s recent market data offers a snapshot of the dynamics at play. Maverick’s research shows that first-quarter 2026 fast-moving consumer goods market value grew by 15 per cent, while 90 per cent of consumers expect prices of foreign goods to decline. These shifts in consumer sentiment demand the kind of granular, real-time intelligence that Maverick specialises in providing.

Sargent, who is also the author of the Amazon best-selling book Beyond Borders, Beyond Beliefs, said he was drawn to the opportunity by the firm’s reputation and the scale of the African market.

“Maverick has built an impressive business and reputation across Africa,” he said. “I look forward to working alongside the team as they continue to innovate, expand their impact, and help organisations make better decisions through data and insights.”
