Macclesfield FC forward Ethan McLeod has tragically died in a car accident on the M motorway on Tuesday, while returning from a match.
The 23-year-old was travelling back after featuring as a substitute in the Silkmen’s National League North fixture against Bedford Town. The accident occurred near Northampton when his white Mercedes collided with a motorway barrier, according to reports.
Macclesfield FC released a statement expressing their devastation. “News of Ethan’s passing has devastated our entire club and no words can convey the immense sense of sadness and loss that we feel now,” the club said.
McLeod, who joined Macclesfield in July after a successful trial, had quickly become a fan favourite, scoring three goals in seven appearances. He found the net on his debut against Atherton LR in September.
“Ethan had broken into the first team and started to make a real difference, scoring two goals in recent weeks,” said Jon Smart, a fan and board member of the Silkmen Supporters Trust (SST). “He was a nippy forward, and the fans viewed him as an important member of the squad, improving with every game.”
Smart further highlighted McLeod’s personality, adding, “He regularly came over to the bar after games to mingle with supporters, and you couldn’t help but notice his engaging smile and cheery demeanour.”
The young forward’s former club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, where his younger brother Conor currently plays in the academy, also expressed their heartbreak. Wolves confirmed they will provide support to Conor and his family during this difficult time.
A minute’s silence will be held before Wolves’ home game against Brentford on Saturday as a mark of respect.
VZN FC, who McLeod played for in the Baller League, also released a statement, saying, “We send our love and condolences to his family, friends and teammates at this heartbreaking time.”
Macclesfield’s next scheduled match is against Alfreton Town on Saturday, but the club has yet to confirm whether the game will proceed. The SST stated that McLeod will “forever be a Silkman,” echoing the sentiments of a club that has faced tragedy before, with the deaths of former manager Keith Alexander and midfielder Richard Butcher in the past.
