Kpone-Katamanso MCE tours flood-hit communities, urges proper waste disposal

On July 1, 2026, Municipal Chief Executive Samuel Tetteh Kwashie Morton of the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA) toured flood-affected communities in the municipality following heavy rains on Monday. The tour aimed to assess the impact of the floods and reassure residents of the Assembly’s commitment to reducing flood risks.

Morton noted that prior dredging works in flood-prone areas, including at Bela Aqua, Kpone Barrier, Kpone Main Bridge, Bediako and adjoining communities, had significantly reduced the impact of the floods. He emphasized that the dredging exercise would continue as soon as weather conditions permit.

However, he identified indiscriminate waste disposal as a major cause of flooding, urging residents to refrain from dumping refuse into drains. Morton explained that blocked drains restrict water flow and increase flood risks during heavy rains.

The MCE stressed that addressing flooding requires collective action, calling on residents to maintain clean surroundings and protect drainage systems. He advised residents in low-lying areas to temporarily relocate to safer grounds during imminent flooding to safeguard lives and property.

Morton assured affected residents that the Assembly would continue to implement measures to improve drainage infrastructure and strengthen flood prevention efforts across the municipality. Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation in Kpone-Katamanso and technical officers of the Assembly accompanied him on the assessment tour.

This initiative aligns with recent efforts such as the EPA’s plan to dredge the Pra, Bonsu and Tano rivers to combat flooding and water pollution (/epa-to-dredge-pra-bonsu-and-tano-rivers-to-combat-flooding-and-water-pollution), which highlights a broader national strategy to address flooding through infrastructure improvements.
