Dr. Amin Adam Endorses Paul Afoko for NPP National Chair

Politics

Former Minister for Finance and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has endorsed former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Awentami Paul Afoko, for the position of National Chairman ahead of the party’s internal elections.

The endorsement came during a courtesy call by Mr Afoko and a delegation of NPP leaders and party officials at Dr Adam’s private residence. Describing Mr Afoko as “the right person to help reorganise the party and position it to reclaim power,” Dr Adam emphasized that the NPP, now in opposition, requires experienced and competent leadership to navigate its path back to government.

“I support Paul Afoko for National Chairman,” Dr Adam declared, framing his decision as grounded in competence rather than popularity. “We know the serious people who can bring us back to power. We do not follow the masses to choose someone to support; we support those we believe have the potential to win and lead the party.”

While affirming his unwavering loyalty to the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Adam argued that Mr Afoko represents the most suitable candidate to lead the party’s reorganisation efforts. His confidence stems from their previous working relationship and firsthand knowledge of Mr Afoko’s leadership capabilities.

“I have worked with Paul Afoko, and I know he is competent. He can also help raise funds for the party because we need money as a party in opposition,” Dr Adam noted, highlighting the practical challenges facing the opposition party as it prepares for future electoral contests.

Mr Afoko has been touring the country as part of his campaign for the National Chairman position, promoting what he describes as his “3Rs Agenda” – Reuniting, Rebuilding and Returning the NPP to power. His campaign has centred on healing divisions that emerged following the party’s 2024 electoral defeat, reconnecting with members who have become disillusioned or sidelined, and strengthening unity across the party’s various factions.

The former National Chairman has also pledged to empower polling station and constituency executives, improve their welfare and logistical support, and ensure greater grassroots participation in the party’s decision-making processes. These reforms, he argues, are essential to rebuilding the NPP’s organisational strength and preparing it for a return to government.

This endorsement comes at a critical juncture for the NPP as it seeks to rebuild after losing power in the 2024 elections. The party faces internal divisions and the challenge of presenting a coherent alternative to the governing party while preparing for future electoral contests. Dr Adam’s endorsement signals that some senior figures within the party believe experienced leadership, rather than popular appeal, is what the NPP needs to regroup effectively.

The endorsement also highlights ongoing debates within Ghana’s political landscape about the qualities necessary for effective party leadership. As the NPP undergoes internal elections to select its national leadership, the contest between different visions for the party’s future direction continues to shape Ghana’s democratic discourse.
