Ghana Calls for Stronger Colombia Ties and Global Reform

Politics

Accra – Ghana has urged Colombia to forge a stronger alliance extending beyond bilateral ties, advocating for collaborative efforts to champion a more inclusive and equitable global order that adequately represents the interests of developing nations.

The call was made by Vice-President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang during a meeting with her Colombian counterpart, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, who is currently on an official visit to Ghana’s capital.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the significance of enhanced South-South cooperation, asserting that both Ghana and Colombia stand to benefit from a more robust partnership. She highlighted a shared ancestral link as a key foundation for this collaboration.

“I wish to highlight the profound significance of our shared Afro-descendant heritage. This enduring connection provides a strong foundation for joint initiatives in heritage tourism, cultural preservation, and diaspora engagement,” Professor Opoku-Agyemang said. “These are initiatives that celebrate our shared past while creating meaningful opportunities for social inclusion and economic advancement.”

According to the Vice-President, Ghana is actively seeking to broaden its international engagement beyond traditional bilateral agreements, pushing for collective action on the global stage. She underscored the common principles guiding both nations.

“Looking ahead, it is equally important that our cooperation extends beyond the bilateral arena. This is very, very important for us. Our two nations share principled commitments to foster a more inclusive and equitable international system, one that amplifies the voices of developing countries, strengthens South-South collaboration, and ensures global governance structures that reflect the priorities and aspirations of all of us, regardless of where we are, regardless of the state of our economies,” she stated.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang further suggested that a joint approach to global reform, particularly through active participation in multilateral forums, could substantially increase their collective influence.

“Through closer collaboration in multilateral platforms, we can advance our shared goals and support the evolution of a more just and representative international system,” she added.
