Road runners chasing World Champs qualifying spots in Gqeberha

Distance runners from across South Africa will converge on Gqeberha this Saturday for the ASA Road Running Championships, where they will compete over three distances in pursuit of selection for the World Athletics Road Racing Championships in Copenhagen later this year. The event, held in conjunction with the Nelson Mandela Bay Half-Marathon, serves as the primary selection trial for the national team.

Athletes will compete in the 5km, 10km, and half-marathon distances, with the top two finishers in each category earning automatic selection for the national team—provided they meet the stringent qualifying standards set by World Athletics. For the men’s 5km, runners must break 13:50, while women need to dip under 15:59. In the 10km, the marks are 28:50 for men and 33:50 for women. The half-marathon requires a time of 1:03:50 for men and 1:13:50 for women.

Currently, several athletes have already achieved the qualifying times, setting the stage for a competitive selection process. On the men’s side, Adriaan Wildschutt, Thabang Mosiako, Adam Lipschitz, and Elroy Gelant have all run under the 10km qualifying standard, while Glenrose Xaba leads the women’s contingent having met the mark in that distance. In the 5km, a total of 13 athletes (nine men and four women) have achieved the required times, and in the half-marathon, 16 athletes (five men and 11 women) have done so.

Athletics South Africa has stated that while automatic qualification goes to those who meet the standards and finish in the top two, the selection committee retains discretion to consider additional athletes based on world rankings, head-to-head performances, recent form, and ability to perform under championship pressure. This approach aims to balance objective standards with the realities of tactical racing and peak performance timing.

The fast, flat course in Gqeberha is expected to produce quick times, potentially leading to a deep field of qualifiers. Local favorite Adriaan Wildschutt, who holds the South African record in the 10km, will be among those aiming to secure his place with a strong performance. The event also serves as a key preparatory race for athletes targeting the upcoming Comrades Marathon and other major road races later in the year.

As the countdown to Copenhagen continues, the selections made in Gqeberha will shape South Africa’s challenge on the global stage. The World Athletics Road Racing Championships, scheduled for September 19-20 in Denmark, will feature the world’s best road runners competing over the same distances. A strong showing by the South African team could signal the country’s return to prominence in international distance running after a period of rebuilding.

For the athletes, the opportunity to represent their nation at a World Championship remains the pinnacle of achievement in the sport. The races in Gqeberha will not only determine who makes the team but also provide valuable race-practice conditions ahead of the international competition. With Olympic qualification pathways also tied to World Championship performance, the stakes are higher than ever for those lining up at the start line.
