ECG Announces Day-Long Power Outages Across Accra East, Ashanti and Tema Regions

General

Residents and businesses in parts of Accra, Kumasi and Tema should brace for significant power disruptions on Wednesday, May 27, as the Electricity Company of Ghana undertakes planned maintenance exercises across three of its operational regions.

The outages, which will last between four and eight hours depending on the area, are part of what ECG describes as ongoing efforts to improve service delivery across its network. The company has advised affected customers to make alternative arrangements during the specified windows.

Accra East: Eight-Hour Shutdown

The longest disruption will hit the Accra East Region, where a full eight-hour outage from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm will affect North Dzorwulu, parts of GIMPA, New England, Obediben, Dzorwulu, and surrounding areas. The maintenance notice, originally issued on Friday, May 22, states the exercise is necessary to improve service delivery in the area.

Ashanti Region: Two Separate Outages

The Ashanti Region will experience two separate maintenance windows on the same day. The first, running from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, will affect Asewase town, Aboabo Number One and Number Two, Golden Temple, Asewase Renault, and adjoining communities—a four-hour disruption.

The second Ashanti outage will last from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and will hit the Tech commercial area, IDL, the Tech hospital area, the KNUST Senior High School area, and surrounding communities. ECG has been conducting similar exercises in the Ashanti Region recently, including vegetation control operations aimed at reducing outages caused by overgrown trees interfering with transmission lines.

Tema: Six-Hour Window

In the Tema Region, the outage will run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm—a six-hour window. The affected areas are extensive, covering the Seawater Desalination Plant, Maranatha, Buade, Glow Lamp, Frimpongmaa Estates, Abrantie, Dan Adams, Coastal Estates, and the GCB Training School, among others.

Significant portions of Nungua will also be affected, including the Zongo, Township, Traditional Council, Polyclinic, and Secondary School areas. The Kpeshie Divisional Police Headquarters, Coco Beach, Junction Mall, Regimanuel Estates, Parakuo Estates, Queensland International School, and the Best Western Premier Hotel are also in the affected zone.

ECG has expressed regret for the inconvenience and encouraged customers in the affected communities to contact its official channels for further updates. The company confirmed that power supply would be restored to all areas once the scheduled work is completed.

For residents and business owners in the affected areas, the practical advice is straightforward: charge devices, stock up on ice, and plan around the outage windows. In a country where power reliability remains a persistent concern, these scheduled maintenance exercises—while disruptive—are a necessary part of keeping the grid functional.
