Black Stars Players to Receive $100,000 Appearance Fee for World Cup 2026

Ghana’s Black Stars players will each receive $100,000 in appearance fees for representing the country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has confirmed.

The figure, which has remained unchanged since Ghana’s first World Cup appearance in South Africa in 2010, was disclosed during an interview with TV3 on Saturday. Adams rejected calls from some quarters to increase the amount, arguing that the sum should not fluctuate with currency movements.

“The appearance fee for the Black Stars players has been pegged at $100,000 per player. Some said that because the cedi had become stronger, we should increase it, but we said no,” Adams said. “Because if the cedi had become weaker, would you have said that we should reduce the dollar equivalent so it gives you the same cedi amount? You would not say so.”

The announcement comes as Ghana’s 28-man provisional squad intensifies preparations at a training camp in Wales. Twenty-six slots are available for the final World Cup roster, meaning two players will be cut before the squad is officially confirmed on Monday, June 1.

The squad received a significant boost on Saturday when midfield general Thomas Partey and forward Inaki Williams joined their teammates at Dragon Park, linking up with 22 other players already in camp. The Black Stars are set to face Wales in a pre-tournament friendly at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff as part of their build-up to the global showpiece.

Appearance fees have long been a standard feature of Ghana’s World Cup participation, serving as a motivational tool and a recognition of the sacrifices players make to represent their nation on the world’s biggest sporting stage. The practice, however, has occasionally attracted public debate, particularly when the national team’s performance has not matched expectations.

The consistency of the $100,000 figure over a 16-year period — from 2010 through to 2026 — is notable, especially given the significant depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar during that time. In real terms, the purchasing power of the appearance fee has diminished considerably since it was first introduced.

Questions around squad selection have also been in the spotlight, with recent reporting examining who really picks the Black Stars and the dynamics behind the final 28-man roster chosen by head coach Carlos Queiroz.

Ghana will be hoping to make a meaningful impact at the expanded 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The Black Stars’ qualification has generated considerable excitement among fans, and the squad’s preparations reflect the high expectations surrounding the team’s campaign.

As the final squad announcement looms, all eyes will be on Queiroz and his technical team to see which two players will miss the cut from the current 28-man provisional roster.
