Central Tongu Bridges Urged to Open Soon

Assembly Member for the Adidome Central Electoral Area, Mr Guggisberg Fiagbenu, is urging the government and the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) to expedite the commissioning of the newly completed Aklakpa and Tsetsekpo bridges on the Adidome–Juapong stretch in the Central Tongu district of the Volta Region.

Mr Fiagbenu, who also chairs the Adidome–Juapong Transport Union, stated that the completion of the bridges is a testament to the government’s commitment to the development of the Tongu enclave.

He recounted how he initially called for government intervention following the collapse of the Aklakpa bridge, and subsequently advocated for the upgrade of the Tsetsekpo bridge to the same standard. “We are grateful that our appeals were heard, leading to the extensive rehabilitation and expansion works we see today,” he said.

While confirming the completion of both bridges, Mr Appiani and project supervisor, Mr Jonas Asamoa Peprah, have yet to announce a formal opening date. Mr Fiagbenu revealed that his office has written to the Volta Regional Directorate of the GHA requesting timelines for the commissioning and handover process, but is still awaiting a response.

“This clarity is crucial for the community to plan and ensure the orderly use of these vital infrastructure projects,” he emphasised. He further expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in enhancing road safety and mobility in the area.

The Transport Union, as part of efforts to support the national economy, has also implemented a five per cent reduction in fares, effective December 8, 2025.

However, Mr Fiagbenu noted recent tensions among some youth regarding access to the bridges. He appealed for calm and urged all parties to exercise restraint until official guidance is provided by the GHA.

The Ghana News Agency reports that the GHA and Mr Roland Appiani have asked residents to be patient, stating that preparations for the commissioning are underway and a contractor has been awarded the final access road works.

Mr Fiagbenu is now requesting that the GHA conclude the final inspection and commissioning within one week. He warned that if no response is received, the community may consider a peaceful demonstration to voice their concerns, adding that any such action would be a last resort and conducted with respect for the law.

He reiterated the community’s commitment to collaboration and believes a swift commissioning will significantly improve connectivity and foster economic growth in the Tongu area.
