Kane Draws Level With Lineker as England Outgun Croatia in World Cup Thriller

Harry Kane struck twice as England opened their World Cup campaign with a pulsating 4-2 victory over Croatia at Dallas Stadium on Wednesday, a result that banished memories of their painful 2018 semi-final defeat while introducing a new generation of English attacking talent to the global stage.

Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford delivered the decisive blows in a match that twice saw Croatia claw their way back into contention before England’s superior firepower told. Bellingham’s surging run and clinical finish in the 47th minute put England ahead for good, before Rashford sealed the points with a composed strike five minutes from time.

The Group L contest had carried a weight of expectation since the draw was made, reviving memories of Croatia’s extra-time victory in Moscow eight years ago. On this occasion, England were determined to write a different narrative, and Kane led from the front.

The 32-year-old Bayern Munich striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute after Noni Madueke was fouled by Luka Modric. Croatia responded through Martin Baturina’s precise shot into the corner on 36 minutes, but Kane restored England’s advantage before half-time with a powerful header from Declan Rice’s corner. The goal was Kane’s 81st for England and his 10th at World Cup finals, drawing him level with Gary Lineker’s long-standing record.

England’s defensive vulnerabilities, however, were laid bare during the contest. Croatia’s two goals came from avoidable errors at the back, a concern that will not have escaped manager Gareth Southgate’s attention as the knockout rounds approach. For a team with genuine ambitions of lifting the trophy, the backline’s organisation will need significant tightening.

Yet the attacking intent on display was unmistakable. Bellingham’s goal, a powerful run down the right followed by a low finish that kissed the post on its way in, was the kind of moment that announces a player as a genuine tournament force. Rashford’s late contribution, set up by Bukayo Saka, underlined the depth of English attacking options.

The victory positions England favourably in Group L, though sterner tests await. Ghana, who arrive in Boston riding high after their dramatic opening win over Panama, will present a markedly different challenge on Tuesday. Stephen Amoah, the Nhyiaeso Member of Parliament, has already urged the Black Stars to guard against complacency as they prepare for what promises to be one of the group stage’s most compelling fixtures.

Croatia, meanwhile, face a crucial encounter with Panama in Toronto on June 23, knowing that another defeat could leave their tournament in serious jeopardy.
