In a significant blow to transnational organised crime, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 186 suspects, including 96 Nigerians and four Togolese nationals, in an intelligence-led operation targeting human trafficking and related offences in the Ashanti Region.

The operation, conducted by the Inspector-General of Police’s Special Operations Team (SOT) in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, unfolded between June 8 and 17, 2026. Officers carried out coordinated raids in multiple communities including Asafo, Kenyase Aframa, Asokwa, Buokrom, Krofrom, Atonsu-Bokuro, Asawase, and Old Tafo Ahenbronum.

According to police, the operation aimed to identify, disrupt and dismantle criminal networks engaged in human trafficking, sexual exploitation, narcotics trafficking, unlawful possession of firearms and other organised criminal activities, following recent reforms to Ghana’s firearms licensing system announced by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak.

A major breakthrough occurred on June 9 at Kenyase Aframa, where officers apprehended Gladys Ibrahim, also known as “Mama Gee”, alongside 96 Nigerian nationals and four Togolese nationals. Preliminary investigations indicate the suspects are linked to a transnational criminal network involved in human trafficking, sexual exploitation, narcotics trafficking and other organised criminal activities.

During the raids, several individuals believed to have been exploited were rescued, including minors who were immediately separated from suspects and placed under protective care in accordance with child protection protocols. Foreign nationals identified as victims are being processed in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service to complete immigration formalities and, where applicable, facilitate repatriation.

The Ghana Police Service commended the Special Operations Team and the Ashanti Regional Police Command for their professionalism and dedication. Investigations remain ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the suspected criminal network, with all suspects currently in custody or assisting with investigations.

The operation underscores the police’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and their pledge to sustain efforts to combat organised crime and ensure public safety.
