Kcee Explains Why He Declined to Sign with Flavour

Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, popularly known as Kcee, has publicly addressed his long‑rumoured feud with fellow artiste Flavour during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos.

The tension, which first surfaced on social media in 2024 when Flavour hinted that someone was copying his musical style, escalated after Kcee perceived the comment as a veiled shade. Kcee warned Flavour to stop trying to “gatekeep” Igbo cultural music, emphasizing that he entered the music industry before his colleague.

Speaking to Yanga FM, Kcee recalled his first encounter with Flavour years ago when talent manager Soso Soberekon brought the Lagos‑based singer to him for a potential record deal. “Soso came to me with Flavour, but I told him I couldn’t sign him because I didn’t see the potential at that time,” Kcee said.

He clarified that the rift is not rooted in that early rejection but rather a perceived superiority complex. “Some of my peers think I’m not talented because I never brag about my skills. That humility is being mistaken for lack of ability,” he explained.

Kcee also reflected on the broader challenges artists face when doubters write them off. “When people write you off, hoping you’ll stay stagnant, you work harder and reach levels they never expected. That’s what happened to me,” he added.

He reiterated his early start in the industry, noting he was already driving exotic cars and enjoying success before Flavour arrived in Lagos. “I was already balling when Flavour came on the scene,” Kcee said.

While acknowledging that some colleagues still underrate his talent, Kcee remained confident that time will prove them wrong. “My work always silences doubters. Many who once criticized me have now apologised and admitted they were wrong,” he concluded.

The interview sheds new light on the personal dynamics behind the public feud, suggesting that professional disagreements and differing attitudes toward self‑promotion may be at the heart of the dispute. As both artists continue to dominate the Afro‑beat landscape, fans will be watching for any further developments.
