Kumasi Residents Concerned About Poor Street Lighting This Christmas

Residents in several communities within the Greater Kumasi area are expressing serious concerns over the deteriorating street-lighting situation, which they say is contributing to a rise in crime and negatively impacting evening businesses as the Christmas season approaches.

Areas like Santasi, Patasi, Suntreso, and Abrepo Junction are particularly affected, with major roads and inner streets plunged into darkness after sunset. Residents fear the lack of illumination creates an ideal environment for criminal activity and poses risks to both drivers and pedestrians.

“Parts of Suntreso have become a haven for robbers,” Nana Yaw, a taxi driver operating along the Abrepo Junction–Santasi route, told JoyNews. “Criminals take advantage of the darkness to snatch phones and attack commuters.” He further noted that the poor visibility significantly increases the risk of accidents at night.

The impact extends to local businesses. Alali, a car tyre technician, lamented that the unaddressed streetlight malfunctions have forced him to close shop earlier than usual due to fears of attacks. A seamstress in Patasi, who wished to remain anonymous, shared that she now closes her shop by 5 p.m., despite the festive season typically being her busiest, because of the increasing number of armed robbery incidents.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has acknowledged the issue and assured residents that steps are being taken to address it. “We are aware of the challenges and are taking steps to resolve them,” Henrietta Afia Konadu, KMA’s Public Relations Officer, stated.

Ms Konadu explained that the Ministry of Energy has already begun the Regional Capital Rehabilitation street-lighting project nationwide, with ongoing installation work in key locations within Kumasi, including Japan Motors, Asafo Labour Junction, and the Airport Roundabout.

To expedite the replacement of faulty streetlights, the KMA has engaged three contractors. Additionally, a solar-powered “wet” lighting project is underway, aiming to improve reliability and deter the theft of lighting cables. The initiative will see 170 electronic streetlights replaced with new poles already installed in communities like Ahodwo and Danyame.

The KMA is urging residents to promptly report any malfunctioning or vandalised streetlights to help ensure the rehabilitation work stays on schedule. This collaborative approach, officials hope, will restore safety and vibrancy to the affected neighbourhoods.
