ECOWAS Sends Standby Troops to Benin After Military Coup

Africa

ECOWAS has authorized the deployment of its Standby Force to Benin to restore constitutional order after soldiers seized power, the bloc announced on Sunday.

The decision emerged from an emergency meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, convened at the level of Heads of State and Government. It rests on Article 25(e) of the 1999 Protocol on Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Security.

In a statement issued on December 7, 2025, the ECOWAS Commission said the deployment was approved by the current Chair of the Authority of Heads of State and Government. “The deployment is necessary to uphold constitutional order and protect Benin’s territorial integrity,” the Commission spokesperson stated.

Troops will be drawn from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana, operating in close coordination with Benin’s government and its Republican Army. Ghanaian units are expected to contribute infantry and logistical support, underscoring Accra’s commitment to regional stability.

Hours earlier, a group of soldiers appeared on Beninese television announcing the suspension of the constitution, closure of land borders and airspace, and the ouster of President Patrice Talon. Lieutenant‑Colonel Tigri Pascal was named head of a newly formed military transition council, citing dissatisfaction with Talon’s leadership.

ECOWAS emphasized its resolve to defend democratic governance across member states and pledged to provide further updates as the situation evolves. The bloc warned that any attempt to undermine constitutional order would face collective response.

For Ghana, the deployment raises questions about the readiness of its forces and the potential financial implications of a prolonged peacekeeping mission. Analysts note that Ghana’s participation could enhance its standing within ECOWAS while also stretching defence resources.

The regional bloc will monitor developments closely, with the first wave of troops expected to arrive in Benin within the next few days. Observers await further details on force size and operational timelines as the crisis unfolds.
