The Probe Discusses Scholarship Debt Crisis Live Online

Education

The Probe will host a live discussion this Sunday on the escalating scholarship debt crisis that has left many beneficiaries frustrated and questioning government responsibility.

JoyNews journalist Carlos Calony convenes a panel of four experts: governance scholar Prof. Baffour Agyemang‑Duah, education researcher Divine Kpe, former Scholarships Secretariat registrar and MP Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, and Prince Komla Bonsah, president of the UK PhD cohort.

Prof. Baffour Agyemang‑Duah warns that “the mounting debt reflects systemic gaps in policy implementation,” and urges the Ministry of Education to streamline disbursement mechanisms.

Divine Kpe adds, “Students are bearing the brunt of delayed payments, which hampers their academic progress and forces many into debt traps,” highlighting the human cost of the backlog.

Dr. Kingsley Agyemang emphasizes accountability, stating, “We must hold the administration responsible for the funding shortfall and ensure transparent allocation of scholarship resources.”

Prince Komla Bonsah notes, “Our peers abroad are feeling the impact too; the crisis jeopardises Ghana’s reputation as a destination for high‑quality research training,” underscoring the broader national implications.

The panel agrees that immediate policy review, increased budgetary allocation, and stronger monitoring are essential to prevent further debt accumulation and restore confidence among students and their families.

Listeners can expect follow‑up reports from The Probe as the discussion progresses, with potential recommendations slated for submission to the Ministry before the end of the month.
