Russia resumed overnight air strikes on the Ukrainian industrial city of Kremenchuk on Sunday, hours after President Volodymyr Zelensky described his phone call with Donald Trump’s negotiating team as ‘very constructive.’
The mayor of Kremenchuk, Vitaliy Maletsk, said the city endured a massive combined strike that knocked out water, electricity and heat supplies, though no fatalities have been confirmed yet.
According to Russian defence officials, Russian forces also shot down seventy‑seven Ukrainian drones across multiple locations during the same period.
While the aerial assaults continue, diplomatic efforts to end the war have intensified. Ukrainian officials in Miami discussed a U.S‑led peace framework with American envoys, aiming to craft a settlement acceptable to both Kyiv and Moscow.
On Saturday, Zelensky told reporters he was determined to keep working with the United States after meeting Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and the former president’s son‑in‑law Jared Kushner. ‘We covered many aspects and went through key points that could ensure an end to the bloodshed,’ he posted on X.
The White House has urged both sides to accept a multi‑point plan, but progress remains limited. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have condemned the latest Russian attacks and called for de‑escalation.
Macron posted that he had spoken with Zelensky, offering ‘full solidarity,’ while the UK’s Sir Keir Starmer and Germany’s Friedrich Merz are set to meet in London on Monday to discuss security guarantees for a post‑war Ukraine.
Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to support any genuine peace initiative that brings stability to the region, noting the humanitarian impact on civilians resonates with Ghana’s own commitment to peacekeeping.
Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected proposals for a peacekeeping force, labeling any troops deployed to Ukraine as ‘legitimate targets.’ Meanwhile, Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov said talks with Witkoff resulted in an agreed framework for security arrangements and deterrence capabilities.
The next steps hinge on whether Russia will demonstrate a serious commitment to long‑term peace, as emphasized by U.S. and Ukrainian officials in a joint statement released on Saturday.
