Benin Soldiers Say They Have Seized Power on TV

International

On Sunday, a group of soldiers aired a televised announcement that they have seized power in Benin, suspending the constitution and dissolving all state institutions.

The soldiers read a statement declaring, “The army solemnly commits to give the Beninese people the hope of a truly new era, where fraternity, justice and work prevail,” before adding that political party activities are halted until further notice.

A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment, leaving the nation and regional observers awaiting an official reaction.

The coup comes weeks before Benin’s scheduled presidential election in April, which would see incumbent Patrice Talon step down after two terms – a rare democratic transition in West and Central Africa.

Benin’s ruling coalition had nominated Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni as its presidential candidate, positioning him as the architect of recent economic reforms should he win.

Political analysts note that Talon’s decision to step aside was seen as a move toward stabilising the country, but the sudden military takeover threatens to reverse those gains, echoing the ninth coup in the region since 2020, including last month’s takeover in Guinea‑Bissau.

In Accra, Ghanaian officials have urged restraint and called for a swift return to civilian rule, emphasizing that any disruption to democratic processes in neighbouring states could have spill‑over effects on regional trade and security.

International bodies such as the African Union and ECOWAS are expected to convene emergency sessions to condemn the seizure and outline possible sanctions.

As the situation unfolds, Beninese citizens and observers worldwide await further developments, while the clock ticks toward the April election that could determine the nation’s political trajectory.
