Accra – Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang on Thursday welcomed Colombia’s Vice President, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, to Accra, signifying a strengthening bond between the two nations.
The visit, the second by a Colombian Vice President since Ms. Márquez Mina assumed office, was described by Professor Opoku-Agyemang as a testament to the enduring and respectful relationship between Ghana and Colombia, rooted in shared values.
Acknowledging Ms. Márquez Mina’s dedication to racial equity, human dignity, and reparative justice, the Vice President noted the resonance of these principles both within Latin America and globally. “Colombia’s commitment to advancing reparations strongly aligns with Ghana’s leadership in this vital discourse,” she stated.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a crucial platform for Colombian businesses aiming to tap into Africa’s burgeoning market of 1.3 billion consumers. She affirmed Ghana’s readiness to serve as Colombia’s gateway to this expansive market, pinpointing agriculture, digital innovation, climate resilience, and trade investment as key areas for potential collaboration.
“Improved air and maritime connectivity will be essential to fully unlock this potential,” she added.
The meeting culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Colombia’s Diplomatic Academy and Ghana’s Foreign Service Institute. This MoU formalizes cooperation and exchange programs between the two countries’ diplomatic training institutions.
Both Ghana and Colombia lauded their relationship as a prime example of effective South-South cooperation, a collaborative model between developing nations that moves beyond traditional North-South aid frameworks.
