ACCRA — In a coordinated humanitarian response to the devastating floods that inundated parts of Ghana’s capital, international relief organization Qatar Charity has partnered with Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to deliver essential supplies to affected residents in the Ayawaso Central constituency.

The joint relief distribution, which commenced on Wednesday, follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama to provide immediate assistance to thousands of individuals and families displaced by record-breaking rainfall that submerged neighborhoods across Accra earlier in the week. The extreme precipitation, which left parts of the city underwater, represents the highest monthly rainfall recorded in Ghana since 1995, according to the Interior Minister Ghana records highest monthly rainfall since 1995 as June floods kill 12.

Organizers report that the initial distribution phase has reached hundreds of households in the hardest-hit areas of the constituency, with items including food rations, clean water, hygiene kits, blankets, and temporary shelter materials. NADMO and Qatar Charity officials supervised the operation to ensure equitable distribution and to verify that assistance reached those most in need.

“The scale of this disaster requires both national and international cooperation,” said a NADMO spokesperson overseeing the distribution. “By partnering with organizations like Qatar Charity, we can leverage additional resources and expertise to reach more vulnerable communities more quickly.”

Qatar Charity representatives emphasized their organization’s commitment to rapid disaster response. “Our mission is to provide timely humanitarian assistance to communities affected by disasters, wherever they occur,” stated a senior official from the organization. “We are working closely with NADMO and local community leaders to ensure that aid is distributed efficiently and transparently.”

The flooding in Ayawaso Central, like in many parts of Accra, resulted from an extraordinary weather event that overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems. Residents described scenes of rapidly rising waters that entered homes and businesses with little warning, forcing many to seek refuge on higher ground or in temporary shelters.

Local community leaders have praised the coordinated response while noting that the recovery process will be lengthy. “While this immediate assistance is critically important, we know that rebuilding lives and livelihoods will take months, if not years,” said one community organizer. “We appreciate the support from both national and international partners as we begin this process.”

Environmental experts point to a combination of factors that contributed to the severity of the flooding, including intense rainfall patterns linked to climate change, inadequate drainage infrastructure in some areas, and unplanned urban development that has reduced natural water absorption areas.

As the relief distribution continues, organizers are already assessing needs for the next phase of assistance, which may include support for livelihood recovery, psychological support services, and initiatives to address waterborne disease risks that often follow flooding events.

The partnership between Qatar Charity and NADMO represents an example of international cooperation in disaster response that has become increasingly vital as climate-related extreme weather events grow more frequent and severe globally. For residents of Ayawaso Central, the arrival of aid provides not only material support but also a tangible reminder that they are not alone in their recovery efforts.

Officials from both organizations have pledged to remain engaged in the community throughout the recovery process, with plans to transition from emergency relief to longer-term recovery support as the immediate crisis phase subsides. The collaboration underscores the importance of building resilient community networks capable of responding effectively to future disasters while addressing the underlying vulnerabilities that exacerbate their impact.
